The History of Creme Lure Co. and the Plastic Worm

The History of Creme Lure Co. and the Plastic Worm

Fishing, Freshwater Fishing
Nick Creme HAD A DREAM. The lure that had the biggest impact on American fishing started in the late 1940s in a basement in Akron Ohio. That's where Nick and Cosma Creme cooked up the perfect combination of vinyl, oils and pigments to produce a molded plastic worm that not only looked and felt soft and alive, but also stayed that way when exposed to air over time. 1949 would be the official birth year of the now famous Creme worm. The first marketed worm was the Creme Wiggle Worm. It was sold by mail in 1951 at a cost of $1.00 for a pack of 5. When the product was shown at the Cleveland Sportsman's Show, a distributor sold 9,600 packs to curious anglers in just a few days. The demand soared, and the worm business quickly outgrew Cosma's kitchen. That's when the Creme's set up a s...
How to Measure and Release Fish Correctly

How to Measure and Release Fish Correctly

Fishing, Freshwater Fishing
Many people approach measuring fish with a relaxed approach and risk hefty fines, particularly if the fish is borderline size. There is no grey area when it comes to legal size of catch. Even the difference of 1cm can have you in trouble, and is just not worth the risk of a fine. Sustainability needs to be taken very seriously, hence Fisheries have very clear guidelines. Sustainable fishing means that fish are harvested at a sustainable rate, so the fish population does not decline over time due to poor fishing practices. Imagine a world that is over-harvested and the corresponding devastation to the eco-system and to our future generations. It is the responsibility of each and every one of us to do our bit to protect the planet. Size limits are typically based on biologica...

Deer Hunting, Hunting
In light of the 2017 hunting season, the luck of the harvest was tougher than years past. With many hours in the tree and on the field edges, opportunities for success were slim. On Michigan's opening day of shotgun, season the moment presented itself in the matter of seconds with only seconds to react. Sitting in the tall field edge weeds for hours listening to the distant shots sounding like drums for a good 3 hours, the thoughts of having a chance to connect on a memory was feeling thinner and thinner. As all hopes seemed diminished, I looked to the skies asking if my freezer was gonna remain venison-less this year. That's when the next 10 seconds changed the whole season. There she was! A mature smart whitetail doe around 60 yds to my left, just inside the the tall grass and ...

9 Dove Hunting Tips

9 Dove Hunting Tips

Hunting, Small Game Hunting
Dove hunting season is an exciting time of year. It kicks off the fall hunting season and can be a whole lot of fun as well as a chance to get tuned-up for fall and winter bird hunting. When heading out to the dove field I prefer to take my Baretta 12 gauge auto loader, but a 20 gauge with 7/8 ounce loads of 8 shot is a great dove gun. Here are a few tips to help make your dove hunt a success: 1) Match the choke to the conditions Using the wrong choke will seriously affect your shell/bird ratio. A common mistake is using chokes that are too tight for dove. Granted, some shots at dove are pretty long, but shots requiring full chokes are not common. Fortunately, today's modern shotguns have screw in choke tubes so you can hit the field with every choke you might need and make a qui...
Pistol Hunting Pigs With Barnes Bullets

Pistol Hunting Pigs With Barnes Bullets

Big Game Hunting, Hunting
My weapon of choice is the Ruger Blackhawk 44 Magnum single action revolver using Barnes 44 Mag 225 grain HP factory ammo. Ryan Travis and the other great folks at Barnes hotfooted some 44Mag ammo to me for this hunt. I graciously appreciate their support and generosity. IF you have a choice in your ammo, get Barnes. The Ruger is topped with a picatiny rail and a Burris FastFire III red dot sight. The sight takes some getting used to so I was happy to shoot several boxes working out my issues. The 44 Mag can be intimidating but by far, the minimum I would use for pigs. It does not take much to get used to and pinging steel at 100 yards is not difficult from a bench or shooting sticks. After a few weeks of practice shooting from seated, standing, kneeling positions and tree branch...
